Rosemary

Common name: Rosemary
Botanical name: Rosmarinus officinalis

Rosemary is hardy in full sun areas where winter temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees F. Rosemary is evergreen and makes a great aromatic hedge, 4'-6' tall and 2' wide. Foliage is used in cooking. Blue flowers appear in summer. This plant is drought tolerant once it's established. Bees love Rosemary!

White Blossom Ceanothus

Common name: White Blossom Ceanothus
Botanical name: Ceanothus thyrsiflorus 'Snow Flurry'

This large shrub or small tree quickly reaches 10' tall and 12' wide. It has shiny green, glossy, 2" long leaves and profuse large, white flower clusters in spring. This plant tolerates full sun in coastal areas but will need afternoon shade in warm, inland valleys but will need extra summer watering. This shrub tolerates clay and sandy soil but does best in coastal places.

Golden Abundance Mahonia

Common name: Golden Abundance Mahonia
Botanical name: Mahonia 'Golden Abundance'

The selection 'Golden Abundance' is a cross between several species (including the Oregon Grape, Mahonia aquifolium), and is known for its particularly showy flowers. This hybrid has also proven to be remarkably adaptable: the specimen pictured here is in a sunny position in clay soil and receives only occasional summer water; another we have is in peaty soil in heavy shade at the foot of a eucalyptus, receiving regular garden water (which the eucalyptus promptly sponges up). Both have grown to over 4' in 4 years from one gallon pots and will eventually reach 5-8'; the one with more sun has far more flowers and berries.
