Flowering Maple usually grow to 8'-10' tall and as wide. Most will tolerate frost to 25 degrees F or lower with some damage. All are irresistible to hummingbirds with their showy flowers and heavy nectar production. They will take sun to moderately deep shade and little or no summer watering in coastal areas. They should be given more shade and water in hotter, drier climates. They make an excellent plant for containers.

These shrubs and vines are the most loved in the Western USA and are very resilient. They come in a wide variety of colors and sizes, from 2'-6' tall. Tea roses are the classical look types that have tall thin vertical stems, with a single flower at the end of the stem. Buds usually spiral open during spring and even into fall if weather is still frost free. Tea roses prefer full sun, well draining, rich soil, with ample watering. Plant foliage at the base of the plants to cover canes.

Orange trees vary in height depending upon variety. But generally speaking, when they are not dwarf varieties they are in the 10-12 ft. category. This tree produces sweet, tasty oranges. It has shiny green, leathery foliage and produces clusters of fragrant white flowers that bloom in the spring.

This evergreen shrub is 3' high and 3' wide with aromatic leaves. It blooms with white, sweet-scented flowers followed by bluish black berries. It can be grown in sun or partial shade; well drained soil is essential. 'Compacta' has smaller leaves and is often used for edges and low formal hedges.

Trailing African Daisy

This groundcover-small shrub will grow 1' tall, spreading 4' in a year. It has medium-size green leaves with lavender that have a dark purple center. The flower color changes to white the next day! The flowers bloom in fall and winter but in mild coastal areas, may bloom all year. It needs well draining soil. This plant looks great on a hillside or in a hanging basket. Climbing Rose

With its dark green foliage and fragrant flowers with full and double blooms, this upright shrub is generally grown as a vine or pillar rose. Climbing varieties come in many colors such as pink, white, orange, red, purple-blue, or yellow. This group of roses can cover a wall or arbor or even a tree occasionally! Roses do best in full sun although some varieties will tolerate afternoon shade. They prefer well draining, fertile soil. Medium watering and more during hot summer months.

This broad-spreading evergreen shrub produces dense, glossy foliage that is 4" long and oval in shape. Open, loose clusters of white fragrant flowers with a rose tint bloom in spring. This shrub serves as a good specimen, hedge or screen, reaching 10' tall and wide. It is heat loving and can tolerate full sun, part sun or shade. Small round red berries appear in fall.

Melianthus major is an evergreen shrub. It is a soft-wooded plant of rapid growth to 12'-14'. It has a boldly patterned foliage with grayish green leaves of 1' long, divided into 9-11 strongly toothed leaflets. Foliage smells disagreeable when brushed or bruised. Foot-long spikes of reddish brown, 1" flowers appear in late winter, early spring.

Nepeta faassenii makes soft, grey-green, undulating mounds to 1.5' high in bloom, spreading 3'-4' wide. The small leaves are attractive to cats. This perennial has lavender blue flowers in summer. Catmint can be planted in sun or shade and needs medium amount of water. Prune spent flowers to encourage more blooms.

Santolina is an amazingly tough plant with small, yellow, button-sized flowers that cover the 3' tall and 3' wide shrub in the summer months. The green leaves are very thin and needle like.
