Blue Oat Grass

Common name: Blue Oat Grass
Botanical name: Helictotrichon sempervirens

The Blue Oat Grass is an evergreen, blue clumping grass that grows 2' tall and 3' wide. Foliage is thin blue gray, wiry leaves that radiate from center of plant. Its showy tan flowers are on spikes 1'-2' above the foliage (flowers more common in cooler winter areas). This plant looks good alone as well as in mass plantings. It does well in full sun or light shade. Established plants need only occasional watering. It does best with well draining soil. The blue oat grass likes dry hill sides.

Hidcote English Lavender

Common name: Hidcote English Lavender
Botanical name: Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'

Deep violet-purple flower spikes fill the air with their sweet, intoxicating fragrance all summer long. Though this cultivar has been grown for over 50 years, it remains one of the most popular today. Its compact habit and relatively short stature makes it a good choice for edging. Lavender has been grown for centuries for its intensely fragrant flowers and beautiful appearance. It is a staple item of every sunny garden, and its dried flowers are widely used in potpourris and arrangements.

Dahlia (assorted)

Common name: Dahlia (assorted)
Botanical name: Dahlia x hybrida

This perennial can grow up to 5' tall and produces full, large blooms that can be 10" in diameter for some varieties! Dahlias do well in warm but not hot and humid areas. They tolerate coastal areas. After the danger of frost has passed, plant tubers in full sun with wind protection. Dahlias do best with fertile, well draining, moist, acidic soil. Taller varieties may need to be stalked. Blooms appear in summer and fall. When first frost appears, dahlia foliage may turn black. Tubers may be left in ground in frost-free areas and covered with mulch. Otherwise, they should be dug up.

Japanese Anemone

Common name: Japanese Anemone
Botanical name: Anemone x hybrida

Anemone japonica is a long-lived, fibrous-rooked perennial which produces great fall color when grown in partial shade. Its graceful, branching stems rise 2'-4' out of clumps of dark green, lobed, hair-covered foliage. Flowers are semi-double and are found in white or pink colors with green or yellow centers. Once established, it spreads rapidly as long as the roots remain undisturbed. It needs well draining, moist soil and partial shade.
