Cedros Island Verbena

Common name: Cedros Island Verbena
Botanical name: Verbena lilacina 'De La Mina'

This attractive perennial quickly reaches 2'-3' tall and 4' wide. Foliage is bright green, dissected and fern-looking. During spring and summer, thin stalks rise above foliage, ending with fragrant, 1" diameter, lavender blue clusters of flowers, attracting bees and butterflies. This mound shaped plant prefers full to part sun. It is drought tolerant once it's established but will do better with occasional water during hot summer months.

Nanho Purple Butterfly Bush

Common name: Nanho Purple Butterfly Bush
Botanical name: Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Purple'

This deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub will grow to 10' tall and 15' wide; it produces pink, lilac, blue, purple, and white blooms depending upon the cultivar. It attracts butterflies and does well in full sun or light shade.

Brookside Cranesbill

Common name: Brookside Cranesbill
Botanical name: Geranium 'Brookside'

This beautiful hybrid of 2 popular Geraniums can reach 2.5 ft. tall and wide. Leaves are round, 3" wide, and serrated. Flowers consist of 5 petals that overlap, which look like a bowl. From spring into summer, these blue flowers with pale centers and pink veins appear slightly above the foliage. This perennial does best in cool summer climates where they can grow in full sun; otherwise, it should have afternoon shade. Dead head after first bloom to get a repeat performance. This plant likes moist, well draining soil.

Licorice Plant

Common name: Licorice Plant
Botanical name: Helichrysum petiolare

This groundcover will grow 1'-3' tall and wide. It felt-look, silvery gray, small leaves that densely cover the plant. Because it has a trailing habit, this plant looks great in hanging baskets and containers. It does well in full sun and dry, well draining soil. It is grown for foliage, not flowers which are considered insignificant. Established plants are drought tolerant. Be careful not to overwater.

White Nancy Dead Nettle

Common name: White Nancy Dead Nettle
Botanical name: Lamium maculatum 'White Nancy'

The 'White Nancy' grows to a size of 6" tall, spreading by underground stolons or rooting in the stems. Its white leaves have a green margin; in the summer, pure white flowers are borne. Considering their delicate appearance, the plants are remarkably cold and drought tolerant and do not seem to be bothered much by bugs. When established in coastal gardens, the plant needs little summer watering.
