Common name: Garden Nasturtium
Botanical name: Tropaeolum majus

This garden annual/groundcover will grow less than 1' tall, but will spread and climb up to 6'. Nasturtium has 2" light green leaves with red, orange, yellow, or white flowers that are in constant bloom throughout the warm season. This plant usually reseeds, with new plants emerging in early spring. This plant does better with regular watering. Some folks put the leaves and flowers in salads!

Silver Arrow Miscanthus

Botanical name: Miscanthus sinensis 'Silberfeder'

This attractive ornamental grass reaches 8' tall and 3'-4' wide. Foliage is green, slender, with a white color midrib. Silver flower panicles appear in summer, high above the foliage, making it a stunning view. Cut foliage in early spring to tidy the plant. This grass prefers full sun and is not fussy about soil. It tolerates wet conditions, wind and snow.

The Catalina cherry is an evergreen tree or shrub that grows 15'-40' high and wide. It develops showy white flowers in the spring and red fruit in the fall. It is resistant to oak root fungus. Dwarf Lily of the Nile

This clumping dwarf variety of Agapanthus has green, strap-like, evergreen leaves. Clusters of blue, oval shaped flowers appear in summer on top of stalks, making this plant about 2' tall. This dependable plant can be grown in sun or partial sun. It is drought tolerant in coastal areas but will appreciate occasional watering in inland warm areas, especially during the summer. This perennial attracts butterflies.

Dark Star Ceanothus

Botanical name: Ceanothus 'Dark Star'

Dark Star Ceanothus grows to 6' tall and 8' wide, producing small, rounded clusters of dark blue flowers from light burgundy buds that appear in spring. Its habit is compact, with small, dark green, dimpled leaves growing to only 1/2" long. This shrub does best in full sun in coastal areas with well draining soil. It needs very little water once it's established.

Japanese Blood Grass

Botanical name: Imperata cylindrica 'Rubra'

This groundcover/grass can slowly reach up to 1' tall and 18" wide. During spring, thin lime green blades of grass rise, with red tips. With warmer weather, blades turn completely red. During fall and winter, grass turns gray brown. This attractive and dramatic looking grass tolerates full to part sun, preferring moist, well draining soil. This plant looks great in containers, with rocks, in alpine gardens, in borders. It is dramatic when back lit.

Juglans nigra is a deciduous tree. It grows to about 100' tall and 70' wide. Leaves have 11-23 leaflets, each 2.5"-5" long. Round 1.5" diameter nuts have rich flavor. It's a big, hardy shade tree for large sites.
