Dwarf Lily of the Nile

Common name: Dwarf Lily of the Nile
Botanical name: Agapanthus 'Peter Pan'

This clumping dwarf variety of Agapanthus has green, strap-like, evergreen leaves. Clusters of blue, oval shaped flowers appear in summer on top of stalks, making this plant about 2' tall. This dependable plant can be grown in sun or partial sun. It is drought tolerant in coastal areas but will appreciate occasional watering in inland warm areas, especially during the summer. This perennial attracts butterflies.

Catmint

Common name: Catmint
Botanical name: Nepeta x faassenii

Nepeta faassenii makes soft, grey-green, undulating mounds to 1.5' high in bloom, spreading 3'-4' wide. The small leaves are attractive to cats. This perennial has lavender blue flowers in summer. Catmint can be planted in sun or shade and needs medium amount of water. Prune spent flowers to encourage more blooms.

Southern Magnolia

Common name: Southern Magnolia
Botanical name: Magnolia grandiflora

Its large, simple, leathery appearance makes the pyramidal Magnolia grandiflora perfect for either a street or lawn tree. Its leaves are 4"-8" long, and its powerfully fragrant blooms are carried throughout the summer. Reddish brown cone shaped fruit appear in the fall. If these plants are grafted, they are more predictable (may take 15 years to bloom). Ungrafted trees will take only 2-3 years. Restricted root areas or heavy soils will slow the growth process.

Japanese Blood Grass

Common name: Japanese Blood Grass
Botanical name: Imperata cylindrica 'Rubra'

This groundcover/grass can slowly reach up to 1' tall and 18" wide. During spring, thin lime green blades of grass rise, with red tips. With warmer weather, blades turn completely red. During fall and winter, grass turns gray brown. This attractive and dramatic looking grass tolerates full to part sun, preferring moist, well draining soil. This plant looks great in containers, with rocks, in alpine gardens, in borders. It is dramatic when back lit.

Scarlet Trumpet Vine

Common name: Scarlet Trumpet Vine
Botanical name: Distictis buccinatoria

This evergreen vine is highlighted by large, blood red, trumpet-shaped flowers with a yellow throat. This fast growing, evergreen vine can reach 40' tall and wide. These flowers will continue to appear throughout the warm months. This vine prefers full to part sun with regular watering and more during the summer. This is a great plant for a tropical lush look. Make sure you provide support for this plant such as a chain link fence, wall or arbor.
