Golden Toothed Aloe

Common name: Golden Toothed Aloe
Botanical name: Aloe x nobilis

This succulent perennial will only grow 1' tall and 1' wide. It has large, sharp, dark green leaves and clusters of red-orange flowers that bloom in summer. Gold Tooth Aloe drought tolerant when established, native to Africa, forms rosettes heavily offsetting to form wide clusters. Has beautiful golden orange tubular flowers seasonally. Hummingbirds are attracted to this plant. Porous soil with adequate drainage and protection from frost is needed to keep this plant healthy.

New Zealand Flax, Purple

Common name: New Zealand Flax, Purple
Botanical name: Phormium tenax 'Atropurpureum'

Phormium tenax 'Atropurpureum' is an evergreen perennial. Big, dramatic plant composed of many swordlike, stiffly vertical leaves can reach 5' tall. Leaves are purple red. Flowers stems reach high above leaves, bearing clusters of 1"-2" blossoms in dark red.

This palm-like shrub from the Agave family has a single trunk and grows up to 30' tall. It has thin flat leaves that can grow up to 6' long and only 1" wide. The base is large and distinctive; it usually looks swollen. Mature plants may bloom on a 3'-4' tall stalk. Additional names: Bottle Palm

Century Plant, Maguey

Botanical name: Agave americana

This plant is fast growing to about 6'-10' tall and 8'-13' wide. Wide gray leaves have stiff terminal spines and recurved teeth on margins. It prefers full sun and well-drained situations. After blooming, which could take several years, it will die but will send up new pups from around the base. Some people are allergic to the sap. Removal is difficult if unwanted.

Jade Plant

Botanical name: Crassula ovata

Crassula ovata is an evergreen shrub that grows to 6' with time and with gray green, oval, glossy, leathery leaves with red margins (more red appears with more sun). During the winter and spring, small pale pink, fragrant flowers cover the plant. It likes afternoon shade, low watering, and will live in any type of well drained soil. It can be grown as a houseplant but will not bloom. Trunk and branches are thick and gnarled. Flowers attract bees, wasps, butterflies, flies and beetles. Looks great in containers.

Rubber Plant, Rubber Tree

Botanical name: Ficus elastica

This evergreen tree will grow 25'-50' tall in tropical areas. However, in other areas especially with snowy winters, it's used as house plant and will grow to 10' tall. This broadleaf evergreen has dark green, leathery, glossy leaves 10" long and 5" wide. It does produce fruit but only in tropical areas. It does flower as a house plant. Its milky sap was once used to produce rubber. Considered invasive in Florida.
