A small evergreen shrub that grows 3' tall and wide. It has white edged leaves and small white flowers that bloom in the spring. It is very drought tolerant.

Botanical name: Carex elata 'Aurea'

This Sedge is a short ornamental grass the grows to about 3' tall and wide. It grows in full sun, needing regular watering. If planted in partial shade, this plant will need less watering; foliage will turn more lime green in shade. Foliage is evergreen, starting off in spring as bright yellow, turning green depending on amount of sun. May die back in winter but will come back in spring. This grass will grow in standing water thus making it useful for ponds and boggy areas. In some areas, this plant is used as an annual.

This perennial plant will reach 3' high and has medium-sized, glossy dark green leaves with violet, or red or pink flowers that bloom in summer and fall. It needs a bit extra water in the summer and no water in the winter. Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds.

California Buckwheat

This is the most common buckwheat that grows in California. It is incredibly drought tolerant and hardy. It's long flowering season (almost year-round) makes it an important nectar source for butterflies and pollinators so be sure to include it when planning a habitat garden.Birds also enjoy the seed heads in fall. Flowers are a pale pink when in tight bud, becoming white as the flowers open, and them becoming rusty brown as the flowers dry out. This gives some added interest and fall color to gardens in the autumn that is unique to California. Birds also enjoy the seed heads in fall.

This is an upright shrub to about 6' tall and wide. Lion's Tail provides both lush greenery and a durable, drought-tolerant shrub. Tubular bright orange flowers are produced from summer through fall. Unique Pelargonium 'Copthorne'™: A large, shrubby pelargonium growing rapidly to 3' tall and wide. Broad green leaves and lavender flowers almost all year long. It performs best with a light feeding in spring and a severe pruning in fall (new growth quickly fills in and restarts the bloom cycle). Like many Unique Pelargoniums, it needs a well-drained location where it can flourish on very little water. 'Copthorne'™ prefers light shade inland.
