Camphor Tree

Common name: Camphor Tree
Botanical name: Cinnamomum camphora

This beautiful evergreen tree has evergreen, glossy foliage that is light green in color. The new foliage comes in with a tinted red color. Fragrant flowers appear in spring but are considered insignificant. Small black fruit appear in summer or winter. Eventually, this tree becomes quite large in size (50'-60' tall and 60' wide) so plant in an area with ample space. Bark can be dark or light gray or sometimes reddish brown. It is furrowed. This tree does best in full sun with moist, well draining soil. Roots can be destructive. This tree tolerates coastal conditions.

Lavender flowers accent the trailing growth habit of this Lantana. It is excellent for spilling over walls or down banks. Eventually, it will reach about 2' tall by 6' wide; size is controlled by pruning and severity of winter. It does best in full sun and is drought tolerant. It grows rapidly, even in heat, smog and poor soil. It is cold hardy to 25 degrees F, but recovers quickly. Fruit is poisonous. Butterflies are attracted to Lantana.

Low growing perennial, up to 12" tall, is used as a ground cover. It forms a mat over time, perhaps 12" wide. Daisy-like flowers have yellow, orange, white or multi-colored rays with large eye centers, blooming in spring and summer. This ground cover tolerates seacoast conditions with full sun and well draining soil. It becomes drought tolerant when established. It can also be grown in desert areas as long as it gets afternoon shade and extra summer water. Leaves are evergreen ranging in color from green to gray green.

Sweet Acacia is a large thorny shrub or small tree has a soft texture as a result of its finely divided leaves. Bright yellow flowers have a light, sweet fragrance. The bloom is heaviest in the spring and may continue intermittently throughout summer and fall. It is evergreen in mild winters. Soil tolerant even poorly drained. Branches are armed with paired spines to 2".
